A Swabian in Vienna

Hey everbody!
After weeks of not using this nice way to tell you what I am doing or how I am feeling, I thought I might do it again.
But for I am feeeling a little bit tired after a working day and an afterhour beer this entry will not be so long.
First, and most important thing. I moved. Yes, it's true. Only after 3 1/2 months in Vienna I found a new place a little closer to my workplace. I will soon upload some pictures of my room and show you.
Here at work nothing intersting happened. Most things don't work, as usual in science, but I am becoming more and more stressed out.
What is making me worried most are all the holiday plans I have. Several countries and continents are on the list and I do not know when and how to work in between. Maybe you have tip!
I never thought that this year would be like this.

Oh Lord, a lot has happened!

My dear friends and fans. This is to all people who still read my BLOG.
Again some time has passed since I last wrote to you. Infacht almost a week. A lot has happened since I came back to Vienna and right now I feel like it had been weeks that I was back home in Baden-Württemberg.
Infact I have only just come back from two nice days which I spent in the capital of the Czech Republic in Prag. Spontaneously I trvelled there for I have had not plans for January 6, a holiday. Beside that a good friend of mine, Jochen, stayed there withe some friends and by chance it was also his birthday January 7. I really enjoyed myself. Prag is a great city. I hope you will all soon have the chance to see it. We went out a lot, had great cocktails, a lot of very cheap beer, good food and I even tried out the public transport system, which is as good as the one in Vienna. To summarize I can only say: "Czech this out!"
Before that I was back at work the first week in 2006 at my institute. Working was fine, some successful and some unsuccessful experiments. We will finally move to the new building next week. I am so much looking forward to that. Last week I already moved two book and two pens... :-)
Beside work I had to deal with both pleasant and unpleasant incidents. On Monday I met Nico an old (indeed he is as old as I am) student colleague from Tübingen, who is doing his PhD in Cologne and who came to visit Vieann with his girlfriend. We spent a nice evening in Cafe Hawelka, a famous place and very cosy in Vienna. On Tuesday evening I tried to fix my car, which, after having run from Walheim to Vienna, almost 700km without a problem, stopped starting in the morning of Tuesday and would also not start on Wednesday. So I went to buy a starter cable with my flatmat. But with this it still would not work. In te evening finally I had to call the ÖAMTC. The guy, who was not unfriendly, tried everything but the car would only run after he pulled mine for several kilometeres. Fortunately it would also start the next days so that my trip to Prag could actually happen. Another not so happy event was the death of three of my Mongolian mice. Two of them died soon after the christmas break and the third one is lying dead in the cage right now. Two of them were the parents and they were actually really old. So it was fine that they died. But still it was sad and ugly to dispose off their bodies.
What else?
Well there were more thins, this I know. But I can not remeber right now.
I will tell you in future.
So long, I think this is enough to read.

Restart

Good afternoon!

Let's try this again, now in a better mood.
I mean my appartement is still a mess. My flatmate did not come home last night, he did not show up this morning and I could not reacht him by SMS or phone call. We will see this evening when I come home.
The series of tragedies continued. My mice, oh my god, I really neglected them during christmas holiday but I have left them alone before for several days and they always looked fine. Now the look teribble, skinny and almost dead. I feeded them again and gave them water. I hope they will recover.
Then, this morning, I wanted to go to work and what happende. My car did not start. It was so relieable this winter so far. But maybe the 700km yesterday were too much for it. I really have te get it running again. I love my car.
On it goes. I tried to switch my SIM cards back to the Austrian again. And what happened. It does not work. I tried and tried and tried and finally I have to send it in. Shit!
Today, ok, working, organizing the new lab...
I hope this evening will be better that the last one!

HORROR

I do not want to be over pessimistic. But this is horrible. It's disgusting, awful.
Imagine being away from you flat over christmas holidays and coming back looking at a place that is totally messy.
I can not believe this. Dirt everywhere, the waste basket full, waste bags in the hallway, plates on my computer, the living room not cleaned, wet spaces in the hall, where the shoes were, the kitchen not touched since I was there the last time. I could cry. After six hours car ride, also throug some snow showers, I found Vienna in a snowy condition. Today almpost 15cm must have been fallen. And for the next days between 30cm and 50cm more have been annpounced. Incredible, isn't it? And then, well, I entered the flat and saw what I just wrote to you. I have the shout at my flatmate and - I don't know - if he is not going to clean tomorrow, I have to move out!!!!

Have fun!

Long time no see!

Hey everybody!
Back again!
You might have wondered why did not write to you for such a long time. Well, this had only one reason. I have not been close to PC and not even in Vienna for some days. From last Friday until Tuesday this week I absolved my first home-trip from Vienna which I had been looking forward to a lot.
After a day without a lot of work on Friday, some seminars, I left early, around 3.30pm for Germany. The driving was horrible, a lot of snow and and rain. Still I could make it home within six hours. I did not have any plans for this evening, so the better it was that, after meeting Jule at his place, we ended up in Heilbronn to have some cocktails. During the drive there we celebrated Katha's birthday in a round-about with Champagne Pascal brought. The night ended at around 4.30 in the morning in front of Passe's house with a lot of discussion.
The next day started late, in the afternoon. I spent some time having a coffee in Besigheim with Geli and Jacki and then I went to the christmas celebration/concert of the local MV Walheim. An intersting evening started with a lot of drinks, a nice concert, a lot of dancing and another private party at Ferds's place. Again I only went home at 4.30 in the morning.
Finally Sunday came. It started with a good lunch and went on with a very much desired stay at the Enztal Sauna. WOW! This is such a great place. I love to go there. We spent around four hours sweating and ended up at Ararat's for a Döner. This evening I went to bed early for on Monday I had to get up early to go to school and be assistant at a biological practical course in my former high school, the Biolab. During the day I helped with a lot of experiments and talked to all of my friends there. After the course finished this day I went to the christmas celebration of this years Abiband, of which I know all people. We sang christmas carols and without a stop slipped into the presentation of this years Studienfahrten. I was again very much looking forward to that for the Elba video was shown which I did not see before. The whole evening was a great pleasure ending in the pub Krone with some beers.
Finally on Tuesday morning I went back to Vienna to reach the lab in the afternoon, this time after a quieter ride. I really wanted to work this day but was not very successful for the IMP/IMBA christmas party already started at 5pm. You will be jealous if you see the pictures, I promise. There was lots of great food, free beer, wine, Sekt. We also had Sushi and in the course of the party I was dancing like crazy with the best music mix I heard for a long time. Everybody was crazy, beer was poured over my head and the next day we received a mail that a lot of stuff was destroyed in the course of the party and food thrown around.
I came home at 2 o'clock in the morning after a night bus ride, did sleep quite good and woke up without a headache. For my boss was late the whole week I could come late to the lab and althoug I really wanted do to something productive this day, again it did not work. At 2pm we went to my boss' place for the lab christmas celebration. Good tea and coffe, sweets and cookies waited for us and I even got a present, cool!
Back to the lab and then in the evening to Sergio's place for a great Italian dinner. And again home in the middle of the night.
So today, after almost one week, I finally find the time to write some lines.
I hope the length of this entry did not bother you.
So long!

Somewhen durig the week

Hey everybody!
I tell you it is getting harder and harder to find a time to write to my BLOG.
Right now I am still at the lab having a short break in between experiments.
Just shortly I wanna tell you about the last days. The most exciting event was yesterday the IMP/IMBA (the name of my institutes) christmas concert where I performed in a clarinet duo. I had a lot of fun, met some more interesting musicians and after the concer had a lot of wine and cheese. But then I was completely done in the evening not having any remaining brain or body power to write to you.
Well...now...let me think, what else happened? Today is Wednesday, ok today so far no exciting things. Ok, tonight again orchestra rehearsal and then a party...
...this will leave again being very tired tomorrow.
On Monday, ok, yes, I remeber. Twas a horrible day. In lab nothing worked and I was quite sad in the evening. Nobody wanted to have a beer with me. And so I went home alone. But Markus cheered my up a while when we were discussing about the potential Silvester party in Besigheim and Umgebung.
Ah ja...and on Tuesday we also finally started a new project in the lab. And for that we ordered stuff for several thousand Euros. This was fun, I tell you.
So...now I have to go on working. See you all on Friday!

Sorry

Sorry, der Link zum Sebbi seim BLOG ist falsch. Muss heißen:

Blue Monday

Acutally, before I do anything else, I need to tell you, that I have a new BLOG colleague. He is also a Sebastian, namely Sebi Prill whos BLOG you can visit under:
brainblogger.blogspot.com
But now, the story goes on. Yesterday I had a quite nice Sunday. After my Satruday session I got up at around 10am and after showering and organizeing some stuff in the appartment, I actually left around noon with my beloved Clio towars Baden, a nice town with around 20000 inhabitants south of Vienna. From here I did a nice hiking trip around the Badener Kogel, a hill with around 600m. On my tour I had a lot of time to think and even more. Two ruins were included on my path some caves and several gorgious vies donw into the Helenental and to Baden behind which the flat area of the Marchfeld streches.
Stupid as I was, I did not think about taking something to drink, nor money with my. So after the tour whicht took me four hours and on which I lost my map twice which meant that I had always to go back quite a distance to recover it, I was completely hungry and thirsty, which lead me, on my way back to Vienna, to McDonalds......hmmmmmmmmmmm...
In the evening then, I had no program planned. So I decided to use a cinama ticket (for free) that I still had to go and see "Die Kroniken von Narnja". For I did not have to pay for neither the fikm, nor popcorn or coke and for I did not know anything about the movie, I really enjoyed it.
So then I came home close to bedtime. And ended up listening to Harry Potter again.

Leopoldscafe

Acutally it is strange what kind of days happen to me from time to time. Days in which you encounter all sorts of different feelings. The ones you have when you wake up are completely not the same than in the evening. Today was such a day. I did not want to get up at all, my head was turning in bed. But finally I put a foot out of bed and thing were not quite as bad as I thought. I surfed the web, answered some mail (everyhting with my flatmate lying next to me on the couch) and finally I already left my appartment around noon for a walk in the castle's park to make some Vienna pictures. At that time the sun was shining. The world seemed ok. I went home the, made my weekend shopping on the way and ended up in the kitchen preparing lunch, Grammelknödel, a specialty from Burgenland, the Austrian state south-east of Vienna. At 2.30pm I left again (until this time my flatmate had left his bed) to do some christmas shopping. Unfortunately I ended up having bought most of the stuff for me. I did not really think about possible presents before.
Right before I payed at IKEA I was called by a friend who told me that I can not join him in the evening. Shit! Another lonsome night during the weekend. This seemed to be a horrible weekend.
When I came home I tried to find some activity for the evening but did not succeed in discovering a place in Vienna that I really liked to go that night and definitely not alone.
Some SMS' later and after a phone call I left my flat the third time this day to meet Natalia, a colleague from the institute. During my ride to her place a labmate called ans finally I was meeting with six girls in Cafe Leopold in the museums quarte in downtown Vienna.
From this place I have just come home now. It is 2.20am in the morning and after some beers and a lot of dancing (tow DJs and a live act were playing some dancing music) and a nightbus ride home (did I tell you that they have nightbusses here every evening during the week, every 30 minutes, all night long from midnight until the morning, whe the first U-Bahn is going?) I will finish this monster-entry and dive into Harry Potter's world once again.

Another weekend!

I tell you something!
Just in case you did not know, I will soon be old.
This I noticed again today. No plans for the weekend, no energy to try something new, no will to do something on my own. Well, well, well!!! Sounds bad, huh!
Ok, not too bad. Work was done today and after some of my flatmate's friends came to our appartment in the evening and I started watching the drawing of the WM groups, I finally wanted to go out with Natalia to either a soul dancing place or a private party but then in the end I missed one bus and therefore the U-Bahn and so also Natalia whose phone ran out of battery and this meant that by the end of this day I did not do anything.
Right now I saw the German group. Not too hard for us.
I think I will end this unlucky day now and go for the next chapter of my Harry Potter audiobook!
More on the weekend!

Once again!

Alright, I think it's time to write again.
Now it is Friday evening and I have just come home from work.
Unfortunately I do not have any plans for tonight.
Right now, I am surfing the web and watch TV (Südwest Drei).
Today nothing special happened. Working in the lab, a seminar in the afternoon, practicing the clarinet for the concert on Tuesday.
We will see waht happens today.
Yesterday was a holiday in Austria, so I did not work. I was sleeping long and in the afternoon I went on top of the Donau Turm. A nice tower similar to the Fernsehturm in Stuttgart. I had a great view of Vienna and the mountains of the Wienderwald in the back. I made some photos that I will show you some time. After that I went shopping to Mariahilfer Straße, a big shopping street in Vienna. At least I found one christmas present. In the evening, after doing some city exploring with the city bike, I met some colleagues in the Schwarzes Cafe. Twas nice. I met Alessandros sister...
This was it for that day. Well, on the way home I met some nice people from Südtirol and I showed the way to some Austrians. So I really finally am a Viennese one!

Thanks

Ok, for a first thing I want to say THANK YOU for reading my adventures. It really honours me to see that there are moren than 100 visits every weeks!!!!
For today. I have just come back from downtown where I have been at two places with some student colleagues. First we went to Cafe Latte and had a cocktail for a cheap price because it happened that we ordered when they had their happy minutes. Some talking then and looking at the photos of my Neusiedler See Trip and the goose eating some days ago. The we continued to the "Möbel" a bar in which you sit on very unike and nicely designed furniture that was made by design students and you can actually buy all the stuff you see. Great thing indeed. And cheap...I mean not the furniture but the drinks and so on...And nice staff. They even brought me some water to drink when I did not order anything for I was there with my car.
Before all these bars we had a beer hour at the institute again. One of the labs which is gonna move to Oxford celebrated their goodbye. T'was fine, beer for free and some food.
During the day I was working, things went fine, some reading, some jokes with the boss, like dissconnecting him from the internet router...:-)
This morning I came to work by car which makes thing faster. But in the evening I found my fourth parking ticket at the window. What a sh...!!!
Well so far I never had to pay.
Now, best thing, tomorrow is a holiday giving me the chance to sleep long, then maybe do some christmas shopping and in the evening...we will see.
Sounds like a good day, yes, it was one...
...no I go to bed.

Thanks

Maeckes

After I used my Skype phone just now to talk to Tabea at home I am not really in the mood to write everything again.
Only one thing!
This evening, after I walked in the rain, being hungry, having to go to the toilett and not finding the place where the choir was rehearsing I wanted to participate in, I went to McDonalds, ordered two chicken burger and then...
...a small lady, looking like from the Philipines, being a McDonalds cleaing womand and probably not having an easier life than me, after she saw that I was sitting there alone and only eating my burgers, tried to speak to me her few Germand words and after I told her that icetea is a good beverage she came back to my table five minutes later bringing me a full cup of fresh icetea...only just so, with a smile and free of charge.

Sometimes, things like this happen!!!

Third weekend

Okidoki!
Didn't write yesterday and today will be short.
Well after my odyssee I woke up late on Saturday. After starting a first machine of dirty clothes I finally went downtown to meet Gregor from my lab for lunch (at 3pm). I had a good dish from Kaernten, Kasnudeln, really ok. After that we went to an interesting bar, called Phil. Which is a mixture of book shop and record shop and coffee. You can sit down, read, buy. Actually they have great glasses, almost like my porn glasses, that are now broken...
...Then I went home again to join Alessandro, Silvia and Natalia to visit a Christkindl market downtown and to visit a nice bar afterwards. Was fine! When I came home I did not join the party of my flatmate's friend. I was just too tired from my Vienna night cruise on Friday.
Sunday I spent all day with natalia. We made a trip to Neusiedler See. A lake almost as big as the Bodensee around 50km south of Vienna. We had a coffee in Eisenstadt, the Haydn city, drove along the lake went to the lake shore to meet some swans and to find a beautiful public beacht and finally ended up in Podersdorf, a small village directly at the lake where I had been many, many years before with my mom for holiday. We had dinner in a kind of Besenwirtschaft where I had a dish, typically for the most eastern region of Austria, the Burgenland. After that we made some sunset fotos of the lake and went back to Vienna where we finished a very nice day with a tea at here place. Here I also met Pedro, her Spanish flatmate. Coming home already around 19.30 I ironed my clothes, played a the clarinet a little, smoked my Shisha, took a bath and now I am gonna go the bed to finally find enough sleep for the upcoming week. How was your weekend???So long!

DAY SIXTEEN

Today is already day seventeen but I went to orchestra rehearsal yesterday and afterwards to a Chriskindl market which then was already closed so that we ended up in a bar to celebrate the diploma exam of a clarinet player. I came home after midnight and did not relocate my computer to write to the BLOG.
Actually this is what I usually have to do. Bring my computer from my room to the living room for only there I have internet connection and I also need my computer in my sleeping room to listen to Harry Potter 5 audiobook.
Now I only have seven more minutes until I have to plate some transformed bacteria. Today was a busy day and a frustrating as well.
Oh, I forgot that this should be the entry for yesterday. So, well, I can't even remember what happened beside the rehearsal.
Ah...right...I joined the neighbouring lab for lunch at T-lunch the mensa in the T-systems building. Work was fine but nothing special though.
Ok! I need to go on working.
....Again something came to my mind. I was asked to participate at the christmas concert of my institute. This means that I might need to really practice the next weeks to play a duo with an older guy from upstairs in our building.

Well, now, finito!

DAY FIFTEEN

Heidiho!
Tuesday was today.
Lab was fine. I did my job and everythin worked out fine. My boss is still not there.
For lunch I had pizza. Small and expensive. I might have better joined our neighbouring lab. They had mussels and cooked them themselves. Tomorrwo I will join the for lunch at the T-Centro, a mensa in the neighbouring T-Online building. In the evening, Alessandro came to my lab. He wanted to go to hospital with me again. But after looking at his appointment again, we saw that it was already in the morning. So no hospital. I had quite a few minutes the to shop and reload my cell phone card. After that I wanted to go to the rehearsal of a choir but I did not for I was wandering around for too long and finally was late... Shit!!! I might go there next week.
Tomorrow my new Apple I-book will be ready for first boot. I am looking forward to that. This means that I will finally be ready for really working in the lab and I might use it at home. It will definitely have a funcioning microphone plug so that you will then be able to cheaply call me on a 07143 number which will ring on my computer. Great isn't it???
So, more Harry Potter for me now while going to bed.
See you tomorrow...or maybe not...but you might see my BLOG...right???

DAY FOURTEEN

Hey ho!!!
Second entry for today.
It's not too late right now. I decided that I did not want to go out today and came home early. I made a tea, wrote some letters, cleaned the kitchen and the windows...
I lit a candle for Sunday was the first "Advent".
I will now take a bath and read a little and get ready for bed. I want to be fit tomorrow and not oversleep again on Tuesday.
We will see if my mice will grant me more sleep tonight. So far my flatmate is not home. He is again at his youth meeting and might come home late. I put the dirty dishes and more stuff he just let lying around in his room. The room is a complete mess as is our lab, that's true. But for the lab I have hope for my flatmate I don't.
Well, I am becoming tired of writing all that stuff. Maybe I will reduce my entries a little and only show to you the most important stuff.
So long!

WEEK TWO

Hey today I am writing from lab. This is why this is gonna be short.
Yesterday I came home late. I went out for a beer with a friend and only came back after midnnight, so that then I went to bed fast.
But still, for my freaking mice did not let me sleep, I actually overslept and got up after nine. This felt bad and then I hurried toward the lab again taking again another route which actually made everything worse. I came to lab after 10.30.
Well still this week my boss is again gone for one week, so that working is not too stressful. And in additon there were two seminars today which made thing even better.
Well, I finish this for now but might write more tonight.

So long!

DAY THIRTEEN

Oh, wow, I just typed the header of this entry and it was the ominous thirteenth day today.
Well, the day was fine. Finally I could sleep a little longer and after getting up (my flatmate was sleeping until 4 o'clock in the afternoon) I answered some emails and surfed the web. Not so intersting, I know.
In the afternoon I went for weekend shopping and finally I ended up in the Lainzer Tiergarten, a huge forest with deer close to Vienna. It's a great place to hike and I enjoyed a nice walk in the snow.
In the evening I went downtown to meet my boss and a colleague for a pizza first and then I saw one of the greatest soul concerts in my life. An incredible black woman came form the States, Gewn McGrae. Amazing, powerful, erotic. Really, this music was so nice.
Then I wanted to go dancing to the Moulin Rouge to join some girls from the institute but in the end the concert finished too late so that I had to pay for the music club. So I went home and while I am listening to Southpark on TV, which my faltmate is watching I become tired and will now go to bed.
Tomorrow is Sunday and we will see waht comes up.
So long!

DAYS ELEVEN and TWELVE

Wow, I was busy this week and yesterday I had no energy typing in anything into the BLOG.
Well I went to join a choir yesterday and even had my first performance with around 15 people at a catholic mass. It was interisting. Later I went for a goose eating downtown with 40 people from the institute. Food was great and people very friendly. Slowly I am getting to know more and more people.
But then I came home so late that there was no chance turning on the computer again.
Today I was working again but onyl a little for there was nice lecture in the afternoon about the mouse as a model organism in gentics. It was good to hear some stuff about thing I never did in the lab but that I might encounter at some time.
From five o'clock on we had beer hour in the institute. This is a monthly get-together with food and free beer and dancing music (quite impressive collection of mp3s). I talked a lot and finally went home early because I was tired after that week.
My feet are better now after the football match on Monday and tomorrow I will sleep long to recover from the stress this week. And no plans so far for the weekend. Right now I am sitting in the living room (my flatmat is out), I cleaned the kitchen a little and I am listening to the Kill Bill soundtrack with my Shisha loaded with peppermint and melon tobacco. This really reminds me of earlier times in Tübingen and Jettenburg.
I am really curious what the next days will bring. Hopefully I can accomodate even more to the big city Vienna and also to the new feeling being a working guy doing my PhD.
I wish you a good night. But especially to me.
See you soon,

Sebi

DAY NINE

It seems it is gonna be after midnight that I write to my BLOG always. Tonight again!!!
I have just come home from a midnight snowy walk in the neighbourhood. There is a small hill from which one could look down on Vienna quite fine if there were no tress. Still, it was nice and quiet.
Today some surprising things happened. First, all of a sudden I was allowed to finally start pipetting in the lab. I was helping Stefan our postdoc cloning some genes. I performed a reverse transcription reaction and a PCR. Some basic standard techniques, but good for me having been absent from the lab for a year now.
Then bad news came to my ears. After we first thought we might move to our new building December 9 this moving was now posponed to mid-January. This is really bad for I wanted to start my actual PhD-project Januar 1.
Finally in the afternoon my friend Alessandro called and asked for my help to visit him to the hospital. He injured his foot in the football match yesterday evening and was exmained and X-rayed today. In the end he got "Krücken" and was prescribed Heparin injections which he had to inject himself. This was a drama...

Well then, now I am totally tired, my feet hurt after the football and there is working again tomorrow.

Good night!

DAY EIGHT

Well, really, this working is hard....and long.
Came home only some minutes before 11pm and only had the time to write some mails, chat a little in ICQ, eat and shower.
To shower I had, for I joined some other nine guys from my institutes at two hours of football.
This was the most exhausting thing I did within the last months. I was done after 30 minutes, but fighted to not give up before the end of the two hours. Beside, I am not good at football at all and people seemed not to be too happy about my skills.
Well, they have to go through this. Then I drove home - today with my car - for this morning I was quite late after picking up my Bankomat (EC) card from my bank. This was comfortabele but still takes some minutes. After the showering I looked at the three blisters I got and now, at again almost 1am in the night, I will finally go to bed. Fortunately no big plans for tomorrow evening. Still, work at the lab, maybe for the first time real work. I will help out Postdoc cloning five genes, and from the vectors produce the protein to then purify and send for making antibodies.
Well, this was is.
Good night!

WEEK NUMBER ONE

It's Sunday today and almost time to go to bed.
I have just come home from an evening with my flatmate and his friend at the bowling center. I was not bad. 133. This is around my record.
I cooked a soup (Chinese) now before going to sleep and thougt I might as well tell you, in a summary, how my first 7 days, the first week, in Vienna was.
As you might have followed my entries in the BLOG you know that I acheived quite a lot in these days. I almost managed to have all administrative stuff done, as well in my institute as with the city of Vienna. Tomorrow I will as last deed collect my new Bankomat cards and receive my security instruction.
My appartment also looks really comfortable after the first week. I spent a lot of money at IKEA, where I was twice to bring some color to the flat. Today I hung up pictures and posters.
As I told Markus I might make a video touring through my flat...
Well, at the lab things are not yet very exciting. I do not have my own project yet and therefore I am reading a lot, mostly basic stuff. The great thing is, that I have my own office, for at the lab there is no free bench space nor a desk for me.
But everything will become better, as soon as we have moved to the new building.
I alredy know a lot of people. Of course most not very good. But this will come and anyway, it is only the first week.
Ok, I will finish this know, sounds a bit boring to me.
New things are to come tomorrw.

Good night!
And have a great week!

Snow

Of course, today is Saturday. That's why I can write more often.
Just to let you know. It is freezing cold. I almost slipped when I walked on the sidewalk.
It even snowed really heavily this morning.
Ja, great, isn't it???
Today I went for a walk to Schloss Schönbrunn. A great castle, with a beautiful park and a gorcious look down onto Vienna.
I checked out the surrounding of my flat, I looked for a nice Sauna...
Well, that's it!
Until later!

Pictures

Alright, you know, my internet connection at my computer is working, so I finally uploaded some pictures of my house, my bike and my room. I made a sequence of pictures how my room became how it finally looks like.
You can look at them under:
fotos.web.de/ehmseb/Zimmer_in_Wien
Have fun and write to me what you think about it!

DAY SIX

Oh my dear! It is not getting better. Again it is almost 1.30 in the night.
I mean, of course, its Friday today. But as I did not go out, I could as well be in bed already.
It is freezing in the appartment right now, so I will indeed hop into my comfortable sleeping place.
Today was a lazy day. My boss was on a meeting and so people were not stressed in the lab. I did some reading but most of the time organised my life in Vienna and met a lot of old and new people all around the different lab buildings.
Maybe we, this is all the PhD-students who are gonna start, will meet on the weekend at som time.
In the evening I went home a little earlier, I was shopping a little (bought Shisha tobacco) and finally came home to eat something and to use my new freedom with the internet at home.
Finally I decided to go and see the Harry Potter 4 movie today.
I am back now and was totally dissappointed. They changed so many thing. It was incredibly far from the book. There was no time in the movie for telling the story or going back to the other books. Instead they spent a lot of time for special effects and instead of havinge the jokes written in the book, they introduced new ones that do not have to do anything with the Harry-Potter-world of J.K. Rowling.
Well, enough for today.
I go brushing my teeth, bring the computer back to my room to listen to Harry Potter 5 audio book and hopefully fall asleep soon.

So long,
Sebi

DAY FIVE

Alright then!
Still I am motivated enough to write these reports everyday. And, looking at the number of people who visit my BLOG beside me, there are still people who want to know what is going on in Vienna.
Well then. Todays entry will be short for it is alreday 1 o'clock in the morning.
In short:
- in the lab: a lot of reading (besides papers, newspapers (there is a good article about Vienna in "Die Zeit"), and Aldi adverstisments)
- first quarrel in the lab between a diploma student and the boss (I hated it; you know how much harmony-needing I am)
- some new ideas about what I might be doing soon; I am rewriting a grant proposal with another PhD-student, Dubravka
- later on I went to Ikea with my Italian friends and we had dinner at their place
- the biggest thing: I got my own Austrian cell phone number, so call me under:
0043 - 69981 - 545345
and I have internet with my computer now and can use ICQ and also soon Skype to cheaply call you.
That was it! Tomorrow is Friday and this means weekend is gonna come.

DAY FOUR

Hey everybod!
Ok, ok, I know, a lot of reading for you these days.
It will be less in the future and even for today.
I is actualle already day FIVE now, for midnight has passed.
I went to lab today the second time and spent most of the time reading and recapitualting basics about RNA silencing.
Finally I got my computer account and my crad for access to the lab.
I also organised a desk for myself so that I can do the reading I am supossed to do.
I ordered a credit card today and tomorrow I can pick up my new Austrian cell phone number. I will let you know, so that you can calle me...
After lab today I went to a concert band rehearsal. This was cool. About 50 to 60 good wind instrument players, a friendly American conductur, interesting pieces and a good overall atmosphere. I got to know a lot of people and even joined the "Stammtisch" after the rehearsal. Unforunately I only came home after 11pm because of this and could not go on cleaning the flat. Still I have to finish the kitchen, start with the living room and finish my room, so that everything has its place.
Now I am tired after this day and will finish it, after a good "Guatemala Grande" coffee with a little Harry Potter!!!
Good night.

DAY THREE

Hey folks!
Day three of my Vienna adventure is finished.
Today I started working at the lab. But actually there was no work for me except filling up the water bottels.
I did some reading, I signed the contract, I toured through the institute to get to know where everybody and everything is.
I also registered at the city of Vienna and for god sake they let me keep my Germand adress as first adress. So I do not have to import my old Clio to Austria.
After quite some hours in the lab, without a bench but with some laughs and a chat with my old new friend Alessandro at his lab I went home (I was faster than in the morning when I needed 45 minutes to get to the lab) and started cleaning the appartment. I did the bahtroom and the kitchen and tried to make my room even more cosy. You will see pictures soon.
Now, after a walk to the swimming pool and sauna close to the appartment, I can write you this report for my flatmate Massi or as as I prefer to call him, Flo, lets me kindly use his computer to check mails and update my BLOG.
So long!!!

DAY TWO

Today I got up at around 9.30am with a not too good feeling. Waking up in Vienna, the big city in a still foreign flat with unusual noices.
I started by sneaking into my flatmates room to use his internet connection to check on the thing I wanted to do today.
The I dressed and went for my first appointment. I opened a student bank account (which is for free) and got a lot of presents and maybe made a new friend for the bank accountant was very nice and told my a lot about her son...
Then I went to the "Einwohnermeldeamt" but for I did not have the right form filled out I left very soon. Still, I found the building and I actually went there by bike (the great one, whicht I got as a gracious gift from Jule's mom Claudia). It is an old one with five gears and which clickers when one rides it.
The I got lost one my way back but rode through a nice area with trees which was very hilly. I noticed that I am not trained at all anymore (this I noticed even earlier, when I went to sports lesson on Friday at CSGB).
In the afternoon I went shopping to a mall called the Shopping City Süd (SCS) primarily to Ikea, where I bought a lot of thing to make the appartment more comfortable.
I also tried to make a cell phone contract but could not decide on the provider.
Then I drove back home to start the cleaning. I cleaned the toilet and the bath room. The floor in the hall and some of my room.
Finally my flatmate Flo came back and after I will have finished this entry I will go to the "Jugend" a meeting (from church, but only some real active Christians there) where he went with his brother. Maybe there will be some interesting new people there.
So long!

DAY ONE

I know that today (Monday) it is actually already day two of my stay in Vienna. But for a lacking internet connection I could not write anything yesterday.
Well, what to tell you.
I am here! And, of course, everything is quite new and it feels strange to be in that big city.
When I came here on Sunday I started imediately to unpack the car with again more stuff beside my moving stuff in the truck some days ago.
I built up my bed and tried to make my room a little more comfortable. I unpacked the new linen for my bed I got as a birthday present from my mother. After watching the "Lago Maggiore" video, which I got from Jojo as a goodbye present and some more cleaning I finally found sleep around midnight. It was a calm sleep for god's sake. I was just too tired after that hard day, after the last party at Pascal's on Saturday and the exciting goodbye and driving to Vienna.

Boring Wednesday

Today I will go to bed quite early. After visiting an old student-housing friend from Tübingen in Stuttgart, I alreday came back to Besigheim around 9pm. I stopped by the school band rehearsal and met some of my old companions there. After that, nothing special happened. I tried to see Passe at his Alltagswoche on the Burg in Walheim. But that was it.
So...hope tomorrow will be better. Last rehearsal with the Musikverein Walheim.
By the way, I already have up to four bands I can play with in Vieanna. Among them the Hoch- und Deutschmeister Numero 4 and the Vieanna Bläserphilharmonie. We will see.

So long, good night.

...Lothar is ICQing. I need to reply!

Great Thing!

Wow, wow, wow!!!
Great thing I got for birthday yesterday evening.
Number one a sauna ticket for free entry, number two a vine plant in a pot to take the Swabian wine with me to Vienna and number three a great picture wall with most of me friends on it and me of course and best with the emblems of all the villages and cities I so far lived in. This is a super memory!!!

Still here!

I know, this thing is new. That's why I am again posting although not so many thing happened since the last time.
I have had my birhtday afternoon coffee drinking and tonight the celebrating will go on with a meeting in the "Besenwirtschaft" in Besigheim. Will be cool!!!
Beside that, the sun is shining. That's great. I love the sun! I can not live without it. As I am always saying in Italiean: "Siempre sto bene, quando c'e il sole e quando il cielo e azzurro!"
Beside my computer lies a nice little book from Antoine de Saint Exupery. It is called "Man sieht nur mit dem Herzen gut". I love it. Many very interesting and intelligent stories and guiding thoughts. One of them: Everybody comes from a land, called childhood, and your roots go back to it and you can not flee from it.
So long!

Birthday

When I wrote my first entry I had forgotten to do this in English. As there might be a lot of international people reading it, this might be better.
Alright then, I go on in English and althoug I am not yet in Vienna I start this BLOG with some entries, now from Walheim, Germany, alsongside the river Neckar and its beautiful slopes with vineyards and forests.
Ok, enough of this.
It is my birthday today. I am 27 now and this is reason to celebrate, isn't it?
This "isn't it" would be to homolog to the Swiss "oder" I mentioned in the first entry.
Well, I am looking forward to the afternoon when some friends will come to join me for a birthday celebration with selfmade cake and coffee.
